Heavy monsoon rains have triggered floods and landslides across Nepal, killing scores of people in the last few weeks. Social media users have shared photos and videos of floods and landslides wreaking havoc in many parts of the country.

Over the last week, the Narayangadh-Mugling road, a major highway connecting Kathmandu with the southern plains, has been obstructed multiple times due to landslides. In this context, on July 5, 2023, TikTok user @hawaa92 shared a video clip claiming to show a landslide in Mugling. The 17-second video features a man saying, “Look at the landslide in Mugling. Oh, it’s a dangerous landslide. Oh no, it’s a huge one!”

A screenshot of a search for the video on Google shows it was uploaded on YouTube as well

The same TikTok user also shared a video purporting to show a landslide in Mugling. Nepal Check fact-checked it, and determined that it showed a two-year-old landslide in Himachal Pradesh, India.

11-month old video from Himachal

Nepal Check took screenshots of the video in order to trace its original source. A reverse image search on Google led us to a Facebook page called “Chamba Dist. News,” which posted a longer version of the video with a Hindi caption that reads: “A road near Koti bridge is blocked.” Based on this clue, we searched for further information.

We found that the Indian news outlet Tribune uploaded the video to its YouTube channel on August 2, 2022.

According to a report by Tribune News Service, on August 2, 2022, a massive landslide had blocked traffic on the Bhaleyi-Koti road in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, India.

Therefore, the TikTok video claiming to show a landslide in Mugling is actually a misrepresentation of another landslide that occurred in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, India.
